Officer's Meeting Minutes March 15, 2006

Recording Secretary: Christina Loewy

  • Fridge:
In order to keep the fridge in business, everyone needs to abide by the honor system and pay for what you take. The use of a vending machine is being looked into but until then, please be honest. If the fridge keeps on losing money, probably won’t be around for much longer.
  • Regional Conference:
    When: Apr. 14 & 15, 2006
    Where: Moscow, Idaho
Who: Bio-E students AND Chem-E students (may have to be members of AIChE or SBE but not sure about that)
Vans will leave at 8am on the 14th and students will stay at the Best Western. There will be a paper competition, chem-e car competition, awards banquet, and a Saturday night social. Should be lots of fun. Anyone interested can check these links (or come to one of the meetings):
    http://www.webs.uidaho.edu/aiche2006/
    http://groups.engr.oregonstate.edu/AIChE/
  • National Conference:
The national conference is also coming up in late October or early November so keep checking the e-mails.

  • T-shirts:
We still need a design for the SBE/AIChE shirts. Anyone who wants to submit a design idea can either put a copy of the design in the Chem-E mail box in the mail room, OR e-mail the design to John Yoder @ yoderjoh@onid.orst.edu , OR come to one of the AIChE/SBE meetings and give the design to any of the officers. If your design is selected for the new shirts, you’ll get a free shirt.

  • Elections for next year:
Elections or AIChE and SBE positions are coming up soon. The plan is to have officers (Pres., V.Pres., Treasurer, and Secretary) for each of the groups and all other positions will be shared by AIChE and SBE. Elections will probably start the 1st or 2nd week back from the break.

  • End - o’- Year BBQ:
For those over the age of 21, please put your requests for types of beer in ASAP. We’re thinking maybe we can get the brewing club involved to help out with this so they’ll need requests sooner rather than later.
  • Bowling and Battleships:
Anyone interested in a bowling night or a battleships competition (or both) should let Kevin Laxton know sometime in the near future @ jameslaxton@gmail.com

Officer's Meeting Minutes February 23, 2006

Recording Secretary: Christina Loewy

  • SWE Ball:
We still need at least 10 volunteers to help with the set up process. People who are interested in helping out should meet at Kelley Engineering Center at 4pm. Also, the ball starts at 7pm and the first hour will be dance lessons (swing I think) and there will also be food and dessert served. It’s going to be tons o’ fun. Tickets are $10 each and each ticket gets TWO people in so bring your friends or a date. Oh yeah! Tickets will be sold all day (Friday) in the lobby of Gleeson so don’t forget your wallets tomorrow.

  • General Meeting:
There will be a general SBE and AIChE meeting next Thursday at 5pm. We are looking for students who have done some research or some other interesting activity and would like to share their experiences at one of the next meetings. If this sounds like something you would like to do, come to one of the meetings. Meetings are held on Thursdays at 5 in the Gleeson lounge.

  • ENGINEERING BALL!!!:
SWE is organizing an engineering ball with the College of Engineering. It’s scheduled for February 25 from 7 to midnight. It will be held in the Atrium of Kelley Engineering Center. There will be a cost involved but we don’t know what that will be yet. They will need LOTS of volunteers to help put this thing together so anyone with some free time on their hands contact the president of SWE, I think her name is Megan Smith.
  • No meeting next week:
Instead of the AIChE/SBE meeting there will be the trip to Sunriver. There will be a meeting for all those going on the trip so be sure to check you e-mail. The next general meeting will be held on the 9th of February in the Gleeson Lounge.

  • Soup Kitchen:
One of these coming Thursdays we’ll be needing some volunteers to help out in the soup kitchen from 9am to 2:30pm. We’re not exactly sure as to which Thursday it will be – when we know, we’ll let you guys know.
  • “Walking Warriors”:
Also need volunteers for Walking Warriors. You’ll be walking with a mentally disabled person for a half hour.

  • Habitat for Humanity:
More volunteer work! Need volunteers at the Linn-Benton food share and for Habitat for Humanity. Anyone interested should send an e-mail to John Yoder (yoderjoh@onid.orst.edu).

  • IM Basketball:
Sunday, 1:15pm in Dixon upper courts. Need more guys! If you don’t want to come to play, come to watch. Could get mighty entertaining.

  • T-shirts:
Anyone who would like a t-shirt, e-mail John Yoder. They are going on sale to make room for the new shirts. By the way, anyone with an idea for the new t-shirt design should turn it in before Spring break so that we can have the new ones when everyone comes back from the break. If you have an idea you’d like to share, come to one of the meetings.

  • Omega Chi Epsilon:
Need help getting the Omega Chi Epsilon chapter going here at OSU. Need some volunteers to help Tesia get things up and running. If anyone is interested please contact Tesia or someone from the chem.-e club (one of the officers would be a good place to start).

  • Job Search Info:
The following information is from the recent AIChE National Conference. It is adapted from Travis S. Bailey’s Job Search and Networking Lecture. For anyone who missed this meeting, here is a quick, general re-cap. There are some copies of the outline down in the Gleeson Lounge for anyone who would like to take a peek.

  • Three Main Parts:
The information is broken into three main sections; preparing for the job search, finding actual opportunities and getting the interview. Keep in mind that it is never too early to start doing any or all of these three steps.

  • Preparing:
*Personal assessment: what do I enjoy, what am I good at, what do I value, where do I want to live, what is important to me in a company?
*Develop skills: anything from technical skills to interviewing skills.
    *Build a network.
*Resumes are SUPER important: it’s the first thing potential employers see so make sure that you are represented well! All chem.-e’s have the same skill set so find something that makes you unique.
*Preparation for interviews: most of us are not ready for behavioral interviews (you would be asked Q’s such as, “tell me a time when you demonstrated leadership qualities…” or “tell me a time when you solve this type of problem…”) which is usually the style in which the first interview is conducted. Come prepared. Some company websites will have interview questions posted, all you have to do is look for them.
*Evaluate job offers and negotiate your role. Don’t sell yourself short.
    *Be persistant!!
  • Researching Companies:
*Some important things to think about: opportunities for chem.-e’s, limits with you type of degree, product research interests (yours), expectations, will you fit in with the company, location, happiness outside of work, etc.
*Research tools: news articles, company websites, informational sessions, independent sources, message boards, word of mouth (this is where networking comes in handy), etc.
    *useful websites: www.vaultreports.com, www.wetfeet.com
  • Strategies to Expand Network:
*Participate in activities outside of classes: AIChE, SWE, Tau Beta Pi, Research opportunities with faculty or grad students, internships, Co-ops, etc.
*Get to know engineering and science peers and people from other disciplines.
