Nuclear Science and Technology Outreach

Oregon State ANS Outreach is about providing students in the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering with opportunities to interact with the public about nuclear science and technology, and to develop public speaking skills, especially when speaking to a non-technical audience.

We accomplish this by hosting a variety of events to communicate with the public in different areas. One example is that we hold tours of the Radiation Center located on our campus. This tour is a wonderful chance for the public and other students to learn about the cutting-edge research that is conducted by our faculty and fellow students. It is a great environment for the public to learn more about what it is that nuclear engineers and radiation health physicists do to improve the lives of society. We also visit local high schools in the area to give lectures about nuclear physics and advice on preparing for college and how to be a successful student. This is a fun way to reinforce the material our own students have learned while at the same time providing high school students with knowledge of our field in a more understandable and relatable fashion.

These events are a great way for our students to develop their public speaking skills which are crucial to becoming a successful professional in our industry. These skills have such a functional use in our day to day interactions with our colleagues and the public who may not have such a familiarity with our field of study.

Our outreach program is an excellent opportunity to establish a dialogue with the public and provide them with some answers about nuclear energy and help teach us how to better communicate with them and among ourselves.
