OSU Basic Rocket Liftoff

The OSU AIAA student chapter sent a team of students to participate in this year's Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition in Utah. The competition challenges university students to design, build, and launch a rocket capable of ascending a 10 pound payload of sensors and experiments to a target altitude.

Oregon State University took home a first place win in the Advanced category, which they were competing in for the first time.

The Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition is a student design competition hosted by the Experimental Rocket Sounding Association, a non-profit dedicated to fostering student interest in engineering knowledge and experience in rocketry. Students are judged using several factors including a written technical report, an oral presentation, rocket performance, innovation of design, and professionalism, among others. The 2016 IREC hosted 52 teams and an estimated 560 people.
