Competitive Team Projects

In addition to Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge, OSU ASCE has been actively involved in the following projects:

EERI International Seismic Design Competition
This multi-university competition involves the analysis, design, construction and testing of a balsawood tower approximately 5 ft tall and evaluates its ability to resist multiple, scaled earthquakes. AutoCAD and SAP 2000 programs are used throughout this process. In 2013, OSU placed 2nd overall in the competition. Our teams also have done very well over the years, winning the contest in 2011 and 2007 and placing 3rd in 2009.

National Seismic Bridge Design Competition
Similar to the EERI Competition, students participate in this contest by creating a bridge made from K’Nex pieces. SAP2000 modeling is used. During the testing day, the designed bridge is exposed to static and dynamic load testing, followed by a poster meet-and-greet. In 2013, the OSU Seismic Bridge Design team took 1st place in this competition. 

National Timber Bridge Design Competition and Bridges for Corvallis Parks
In this competition, students design, build and test a wood bridge, approximately 12-ft long by 5-ft wide capable of supporting 4500 lbs. The entire structure, including connections, must be designed with longevity and exposure in mind. The bridges have also been donated in some years for placement in Corvallis parks as pedestrian bridges.
