Notes for Web Publicity Office

Compiled by:Matthew MacClary, Web Publicity Officer 2001-2002, 6-3-2002

Web Site

The IEEE web site is located on the engineering servers at /nfs/ca/info/www/groups/ieee. This is accessible on the web at http://engr.oregonstate.edu/groups/ieee/. To make this location easy to reach I have done the following: at the unix command line type "cd" to get to you home directory, type "ln -s /nfs/ca/info/www/groups/ieee ieee" to create a link to the web page location. Now it is possible to reach the web page location by simply cd'ing to your ieee link. The site has been coded entirely by hand and does not currently make use of any server parsed or dynamically generated html, though this might be a desirable feature. The site nearly validates to the 4.01 transitional w3c standard, but it does make use of the deprecated "valign" attribute of div. The site uses cascading style sheets throughout, the style sheet is called "ieeestyle.css".

Minutes

A procedure for scanning the minutes that will work is: Go to Hovland 108, check out a mac with a scanner, mount your engineering file space by going to Apple Menu->Chooser, select Apple Share, select College of Engineering zone, then select "eel", go into photoshop, go to file->acquire->Umax Vista scan, then select "Beginner" mode, select Preview, outline the region you want to scan (you can crop tighter in photoshop), scan as a black and white image, once in photoshop use the crop tool (which sometimes is disguised as select or something because of the multi-purpose button "feature") to crop as tight as you like, change the brightness and contrast by going to Image->Adjust->Brightness/Contrast, move the brightness up say 40 and the contrast up 18, continue adjusting as necessary, select File->Save As then select type as "PDF", name it according to the convention 2-4-2002.pdf, for the location go to the desktop, select the volume you mounted earlier, and save it to your "ieee" directory under images/minutes, then update the minutes.html, and chmod the new pdf to be 644 by typping "chmod 644 *.pdf" at the unix command line in the proper directory.
